You can see in Robert's comment below the modern Western view of Satan. He really no longer exists in most people's lives. I think the reason for this in my Western world is that in the 20th century the evil done by humans against humans was so catastrophic that figures like Satan paled before real evil men like Hitler and Stalin. And one aspect of 20th evil is that the so-called good people become complicit. Just one example: the fire bombing of Dresden was a war crime but the Allies did it because they wanted to win at any cost, even to morality. And the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan - both war crimes, but victors are not punished. I realize these are disputed events: I just wanted to share my views. You could argue Satan was behind these acts of evil, and thus he is still the villain. But many of us in the West believe the real source of these misdeed is what Mark Twain called MAN'S INHUMANITY TO MAN.
