Ruddy Nuisance Poem by Mary Champion

Ruddy Nuisance

Way back in the sad old 1940s
a small and feathered immigrant came here.
I warn you, this is one of those stories,
that make the hardest hearted shed a tear.
The chestnut plumage and the bright blue bill
brought joy to many twitchers in their hides.
His perky tail roused feelings of good will
amongst duck loving persons on all sides.
Like many of his fellow countrymen,
a trip to Spain can seem a welcome break
and who'd complain, if - every now and then -
a holiday romance for duck and drake
might mean a close encounter was enjoyed
with cute, white headed locals who appealed.
But miscegnating ducks made some annoyed
when objectionable outcomes were revealed.
Pollution of the genome is OK
in any population on the rise,
but Spain's white-headed ducks are on the way
towards extinction - that's not very nice.
The birds from Britain are the ones to blame,
there's only one solution - though it sucks -
a fatwa has been issued - such a shame!
A law is passed 'Begone ye Ruddy Ducks! '
