Riversdale Poem by Deluke Muwanigwa

Riversdale

Rating: 5.0

Riversdale farm

There is an artery of perennial water
flowing always even when weather is hotter
I wanna build my home there because water is life.
The soils are fertile and light
Lush grasses like the plains of Ethiopia
Snakes, beetles, goats and cows living in utopia

I wanna build me a hut of thatch
raise my family from scratch
I can't be abodeless in the land of my birth.
Watching foreigners gaining in girth

If i travel across the border they say i am an immigrant.
overseas they deny me a grant
They say i am a foreigner.
I may even end up at the coroner
Even travelling to another provincethey think i am taking their profit

I shall look for the mother of my children.
Another totem, another kindred.
I shall sweep her off her feet
Promise her a life of love and sweets
Take her home by the river of life.
Do a child every year till they are five.
We shall call our home Riversdale Farm.
Any one loitering will face my firearm.
