You can't understand the poem until you read about her life. Mother died at 5, father abused her, hated stepmother (who died when she was 9) . Divorced, pregnant, aborted, first suicide attempt. Fired from Vanity Fair for criticism of VIPs. Blacklisted by Hollywood for communist views, married and divorced (twice) to a bisexual adulterer, long-term alcoholic, Even after she died, her ashes lay in a filing cabinet for 17 years because nobody cared.

Are you serious about the filing cabinet? Do you know where the ashes are now? She has long been my favorite poet, I knew of her tragic life but never all this. How awful! That's just...I don't have words for how disturbing your post is...

Remember reading this in high school and so began my love for Dorothy Parker. Would've loved to meet her.

Yes, you might as well live. Suicide is never painless, even if you find a way to feel no pain yourself, you leave pain behind you in those still alive.

Miss Parker's wit and humor are some of my favorites, and this is no exception. Everything kills us, so live in spite of it!

Some time ago I found audio file of Miss Parker reading this poem. Since I've long forgotten Invictus, the first poem I was required to memorize, this is the last verse I can recite from memory. I guess that makes it my favorite.

Parker is one of those rare poets to whom one comes expecting perfection - and this poem is perfection. It is the quintessence of laconic New Yorkese which might be far more effective in dissuading suicides than the priest.

Sheer and utter genius, really, where one feels they cannot face things any more but when considering the options (you might as well live) ne-er a truer word spoken.... brutal yet also has a touch of irony...tyvm karen

A track of looking at time quiet realistic way which reflects the dark. In other sense it insists on another fight to dig the positive vision towards life.(If anything there) . Reader to decide. Much atomic the radiation of such selective words. Good poem...............................Pranab k c 10

This poem is darkly funny. It's a little strange...how it makes me feel depressed and smile at the same time. An amazing poem that puts a new twist on suicide.
