Remembrance Poem by March Nicks

Remembrance

Do you remember your first book?
The first one you read all on your own?
The first time that words came to life?

Do you remember the first book
To take you on an adventure?
A world far away from your own backyard.
Distant lands where you encounter beasts
Real and make believe.
An epic journey of twists and turns
All to remind us
That maybe there is more to life.
That we are the ones
Who build the walls of our box.

How about the first book
To bring you to tears?
No from sadness, but from laughter.
A reminder not to take ourselves too serious
To find joy and cheer,
Even when you read it in the dark.
A light unto the world,
Not to be extinguished.

What about the first time a book moved you
In ways you have never been moved before?
The moment when you realized
How powerful words can be?
When tears are the consequence of something more
More than moments of grieving
More than sorrow
But an instant remembrance of the human experience
All shared from a page holding words.
Just waiting to be read.
