He didn't want to go to Vietnam,
but went because his country made the call.
He never could say no to Uncle Sam,
because he loved his country, after all.
His father died in France in World War Two,
and he thought maybe that would be his fate.
He loved that banner red and white and blue,
so when they asked, he didn't hesitate.
When he came back, it was to taunts and jeers,
and long-haired hippies spat into his face.
He'd always thought that he'd return to cheers;
instead, some people viewed him in disgrace.
He didn't want to go, but it seemed right,
and now his future's anything but bright.

Congratulations Kim Barney for your poem getting third place in the competition. This poem has been written from a humanist point of view.The soldier did not want to to go to war, because in his heart he did not approve it.But he had to obey the order, because he loved his country.(Part-1)
