This is a complex poem and I loved puzzling out its meaning: This is how I interpret it. The red swan's beauty is an end in itself. Its stunning beauty should make its life perfect as everyone will admire it and not seek to possess it. So the red swan must be resolutely peaceful and not retaliate against being wronged. But this red swan breaks that taboo, retaliates against injustice and causes much more suffering. At the end the red swan seeks forgiveness for her impulsive act and also restoration of a damaged world. This is a profound poem with no easy answers
