Not impossible to get back, Judy, but trust in humankind must be regained S-L-O-W-L-Y. That instinct to get clean afterward is less about washing him off herself, than it is about cleansing herself of the evil & violence so that it doesn't become a magnet to attract even more evil and violence. Sad, but as a retired therapist, I have heard many such stories. Your poem captures what these survivors need, a listener, someone who does not turn away..
Barry, isn't it amazing how one of the first urges (besides wanting to get clean) is to talk about it with someone. Must be a way to begin to get free of the ordeal, and to put it all behind. Thanks for understanding.

Sad reality that happens all to often.
You know what they say- - Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. Not a pleasant way to become stronger, though! But it can increase one's understanding of the sufferings of others. Thanks for commenting, Ray.
