This is a brilliant poem. The issue of IDENTITY at its center keeps opening up but you never resolve it. How could you? Instead you keep adding layers of meaning which make us familiar with the mystery of identity. I love the metaphor of the tree and its roots, you are exposing the pretentions of those who wrongly think they can know what you don't know, that is, what Hamlet called the HEART OF MY MYSTERY. And I love that isolated line: ROOTS UNDERSTAND IT ALL. It baffles me and that's a good thing because it keeps me focused on the issue rather than settling for a superficial answer. This is pure poetry! It is evocative and inspiring. You don't shut the door on the Identity theme by giving us definitions, you open the door wide to our imaginations and say: YOUR TURN NOW! !
