Raksha Bandhan - A Thread Of Unity Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Raksha Bandhan - A Thread Of Unity

Brotherhood that begins as a bond in childhood
remains as a lifetime reward of care and affection;
brothers and sisters all over the world always so proud
of their perpetual affiliation and connection,
they feel it is a most valuable link between them
as when one is in trouble the other chooses to be helpful,
when one is crying the other is willing to wipe away the tears;
but sometimes when one is broke or becomes poor
the other is seldom caring and resourceful;
when one is over-demanding the legacies
the other is depriving and less generous;
but there do exist brothers and sisters who are so devoted
and they are always so kind and loving to each other
no matter who is rich or poor, who is proud or selfish
one ignores the other's vanity and sticks to love and humility;
and as no one comes in this world with preferences
and though no one comes in this world with guarantees
yet a brother and sister always share a bond of expectations
as they have emanated from a common womb of their mother
that has nurtured one child after another
with the same nutrition and fondness;
and as they grow up together sharing the same language,
the same emotions, the same sentiments,
the same perceptions, the same perspectives so strongly,
such brothers and sisters never stop respecting
and understanding each other's joys and sufferings,
each other's worth and kindness,
each other's care and affection;
and that is why the threads of unity
always remain knotted
and a brother-sister bond is cherished
and celebrated by generations.
