Rainy Days Poem by DiAnne Douglass

Rainy Days

Rainy days are fun
a reminder to the earth, sky, sun,
to the world above and the people below,
of what new things have yet to come
It washes away the old, the rotting, and the gray
Not to drown but to bring to life

So often misunderstood
They are said to be depressing and dreary
Darkened skies make school children cry
And few rejoice
In the true meaning
Of rainy days

Washed away is the dirt,
wiped clean is the slate,
everything is made new,
renewed and cleansed in water
It's the Earth's form of baptism
the world's form of cleansing
It's not a sad affair in the least
when we say goodbye to the sun

The sun will be back again
It will still shine another day
But no matter how long it stays
or how fleeting the rain is
It is an equally precious gift
One often taken for granted in areas
Where it is not scarce

So next time it rains
Do not cry
Or feel sad
Do no dispair over the rain
And bemoan the lack of sun
Remember those old days
So very long ago
When you would excitedly stand at the window
and beg to go outside
the joy at splashing in a puddle
and running around laughing in the rain

Rainy days are fun
a time for laughter and play
a time to unleash your inner child.
