Rabbit And The Stoat Poem by Colin Ian Jeffery

Rabbit And The Stoat

Rating: 5.0

Under a hedgerow, rabbit, a doe, pauses
Eyes bright as diamonds, fur grey, bobbing tail.
Early morning dew sparkles upon blades of grass
Slight breeze caresses foliage of the trees.
Her kits wait to be fed deep within a burrow
Hungry to suckle milk, nourished and protected.
Doe sniffs the wind for danger wary of predators.
Vegetarian, she feasts on grass stems
Satisfied, there is nothing to fear she hops away.
Minutes pass then a slender stoat appears
Short legs, long body, beady eyes, grey fur.
Deadly relentless hunter, prey mostly rabbits.
Pauses under a hedgerow and smells the doe
Runs at steady pace following the scent.
