Excellent advice. My father also smoked when he was younger, but quit about the time he got married. He kept his old pipe in a cupboard for years but never used it. He lived to be 86.

Cancer is one dangerous disease. There can be oral cancer, lung cancer and then metastasis. Many more problems.

The smoker has to pay a heavy price- in terms of money as well as health. I appreciate your will power.

I sincerely thank you, Geeta ji, for your kind comments. It is a matter of relief that there is a greater awareness among people due to govt policies or spread of education. Still much needs to be done to save economically weaker sections including labourers or daily wage earners who are more vulnerable.to this evil.

Smoking is an addiction. If one is habituated once he can't avoid it easily. Inspite of statutory warning on the cigar pack saying Cigaratte smoking is injurious to health yet some smoke regularly which causes cancer at the end.Dear Manga ji, you have astutely delineated this poem having an awreness on smoking to the present society through a burning example. Full vote.

Yes, total ban on tobacco smoking and chewing is the only solution to avoid its ill effects. Thanks for supporting the cause and for your sympathies.

My condolences for your father Mr Manga. I wish we had better governments that would have created more awareness about this issue rather than just letting corporates make a lot of money by selling tobacco related products. Have a nice day sir.

Thanks for sharing your sentiments about my father's tragedy. Then, at least one state govt (Bihar) has officially allowed use of chewing tobacco. Thanks for sharing your views, Dear Sir.

A very significant poem given the times we live in. A few days ago I saw a newspaper report that said more than 60% Indians, almost 2/3rd of the population are unaware of the dangers of smoking and/or chewing tobacco. What is also disheartening is that shops sell loose cigarettes, a lot of time to minors - both criminal offences.

You are right and this is going on with impunity. No regulatory or supervisory authority carries out inspection of shops or kiosks at irregular interval. Moreover, if the public is unaware of the hazards of smoking and chewing tobacco, who is to blame. The govt.- without any doubt. Because they possibly think that this (educating them or banning tobacco products with iron fist) might alienate their ignorant voters.

A very topical poem, as smoking is still widespread in my country. People do not learn from evidence about the harmful, often fatal, effect of smoking. I gave up at thirty, one of the best decisions I ever made: another one was to give up alcohol completely, and find greater happiness in other ways. A fine poem; good to see your numbers getting up.

Today, people are more aware of the hazardous effects of smoking. Hopefully a day will come when the evil of chewing or smoking of tobacco will be totally eradicated.

It really sad to know that the dear one to us had to live with this, and this really made an impact to us for sure, and it not just a warning to others but a strong one from heart as you have this personal experience. Smoking to is like an addiction that we bought for nothing but dangerous...to smokers, it may fun..but that fun is just a mask of real thing. Nice work Sir

Thanks for being on this page with a lovely review and for your kind words of appreciation. As you have rightly pointed out, smoking is addiction which costs the man his health more than his money.
