My interpretation is that the poem is about misdirected ambition. Once selfishly achieved at the expense of others' talents and sacrifice, the goal is ultimately shown to be worthless. There is no natural beauty and certainly no personal achievement of which to be proud. It has been a shallow and pointless exercise. All is vanity.
