Promised Land Poem by Danny Speicher

Promised Land

Sitting and staring into the abyss
Heart so full that my chest can't keep it in
As I sit and I dream of all that might be
If I were to, one day, cross that river

Oh to, once, stand on the bank and ponder
The steps and the journeys that led me here
And all I've ever dreamed of was plunging
Deep into the waves of sunset crimson

I do not know what tomorrow may hold
Nor if I'll ever reach the promised land
But, if the sun will rise on your shore
I will continue this sojourn to cross

Oh how I wished I'd attempted sooner
To breach depths of tumultuous waters
But, the tide's always too high or too low
Or the stormclouds threaten to end this life

So, here I sit upon this precipice
Staring at the meandering water
And the rolling hills that surround them
And I daydream of peace and love and hope

Maybe someday I'll muster the courage
And the conditions will be set just right
I'll cross over and, oh… tranquility
For now, though, I watch and wait… And I pray
