Prevailing Duality Poem by Cody Napier

Prevailing Duality

It's funny how depression and humor go hand in hand
One cares for the other like brother and sister

Sadness is an engulfing feeling that swallows you whole
Your body and mind become numb and disconnected
And in an instant that can all disappear with a laugh
You feel alive in that moment and want it to last
Laughing hard and hopelessly because it's an escape

But when it's over the lowness creeps back over you
Like a familiar blanket you wrap around in comfort

You're no stranger to it - that's why you pull people away
Always finding comedy in the hidden corners to make them high
But you both know you'll dance with the devil again
Life has many moods and these two will never leave you
They blend together in a necessary duality

We laugh, we cry, we love, we die
The good can't exist without the bad, or we'd never progress
You wouldn't know how to be happy if you were never sad

Learn to smile when you fall back down the beaten path
Ride it out until you burst through the barrier of doubt
Emerging back into wonder and joy with a new understanding
Love yourself in both energies even when you hate the thought
For this experience is only temporary, and you must prevail
