Okay, I think I got caught out on my first reading of this. Or maybe not. It's very appealing how this poem keeps itself veiled, forcing the reader to make decisions about context (as the title parenthetically suggests) . So I'll try and pull back and go for the big picture. Clearly there is deceit afoot in this poem. Deceit in a one-on-one relationship. Or what should be one-on-one. Monogamy, as it were. Or monotheism, as it may be. I've never actually contemplated the man-god relationship in terms of being a monogamous relationship, so the poem has provoked thought, and that's always a good thing. So whether the poem is addressing individuals (I have reasons to think not) or the relationship between an individual and a codified deity it brings up parallel issues that resonate and reverberate, stirring up the stagnate bottom (the one who must submit) .
Thank You Lantz for your dissective read & acute derivations via my semi-metaphoric underlying's of which you basically nailed it spot-on...Simply put, & as a born & raised (but not exactly virtuous) Roman Catholic, the work is my besmirching snub at sciences theory on how we all became we...Nice job Chief Detective Pierre. ~FjR'17~
