The colloquialisms and deliberate misspellings-'po', 'de', 'an', 'ma'-give the poem realism. Words spoken as the character would have said them. His story of coming north, falling in love with a girl who made him lose his money, is a sad one. I like the monologue very much, however.

Langston Hughes has such a great sense of rhythm. This blues piece shoiuld be set to music.
