Plight Of Girl Athletes In India - Tanka

PLIGHT OF GIRL ATHLETES
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Usha to young Das
athletics tale, remains same
on your steam, run fast
on your own, the world you tame
to India, you bring fame

none to hold your hands
no help from state to train you
with heads under sand,
can't spot a diamond or two
state has no heart -it is true

why should it be thus?
sports is run by mafia
to fatten their purses;
athletes held under fear
to question, may prove dear
-tanka

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
P.T.Usha is well known athlete from India, ; particiated in Olympics 40 years back, but missed bronze medal. Hima Das is a young athlete who won the gold medal at IAAF games in Finland recently. It is generally agreed girl athletes don't receive financial support and training facilities, due to skewed mindset on the part of the Indian federation. Whatever laurels they achieve international, is due entirely to their efforts.
