Marriage is the biggest gamble in life. I think you need to have experienced a similar situation to fully appreciate the content of this poem. Very well written piece, I enjoyed.

I think my comment was mostly influenced by the line 'Our pleasures taken while we can' which to me implied an acknowledgement that it was planned to be temporary. Based on your reply, I guess I read this wrong. I also understand that sometimes, people who love/loved each other separate. I would never say that it is wrong, but it is usually sad. Sorry about your second wife, but I guess in real life things happen. When I was young, I had wished my parents had separated, I really didn't get along with my dad at all. But they didn't. But that's another story. And you're not a monkey's uncle, I believe I've met a few and it's not you. :)

If I'm reading this correctly, especially the 5th stanza, love is temporary, given for only so long as the giver wishes. Then given no more. It seems that much of the world thinks this way. To start a love without planning on it lasting forever I think is sad, planning from the start for failure. A very well written poem, but still sad.
