I'm in Guam but I'm from California. There appears to be a poem derivative of this using some same lines and stylized with some black youth verbage and subjects. It was so good that it brought me to tears. So I googled its first 2 lines which took me here
I really love this poem, since it really touched me on a personal level. It wasn't my mom that told me the harsh words, but myself. I shared this poem with my friends, and I am meaning to perform it someday when given a chance. Thank you, Maia Mayor!

She is so inspirational! I love you Maia! You inspire me to be a poet.
Maia, you are a very good actress too. Keep it up, my friend. That's beautiful.
Nice poem
