Paradise Porch Poem by Dr. Antony Theodore

Paradise Porch

It is the so-called Paradise Porch
in the Magdeburg Cathedral,
the oldest Gothic cathedral on German soil.

Take a look to the left:
Laughing, happy girls.
Slim and petite.
Nice clothes, nice hair,
five in number..
Joy has many faces.
The stonemason
created great figures
on our way
to church today.
They are the wise virgins.

Then take a look to the right:
Sad, tearful faces.
The beauty of the girls
is undeniable.
But their faces!
What they look like!

One of them touches
the head as if beaten.
Another pulls up her
robe to dry her tears,
a picture of misery.
They are the five foolish virgins.

Nobody takes the other
in their arms here.
There is also not a word.
I feel the desolation.
(Ref. to the Holy Gospel according to St. Mathew
25,1 13 in the New Testament
„At that time Jesus told his disciples the following parable: The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins') .
