The sensual mystery of the sea speaks to us in ways far “above and beyond our reach, ” our “sophistication” of “concrete and steel.” The deep voice of Origins, of the body and our kinship with earth, sky, ocean. The poem makes that clear in the ebb and flow of its various metrical rhythms. The speaker’s “peace and solace” at the end of the poem, finally coming home, and experiencing unity in love with another human being closes the circle started in the first stanza. The voice of Ocean conjures up the dream, the “desert mountain city, ” the voyage back to the Garden, where future and past become One, and Time is no more. Great suggestive imagery and rhythms. A pleasure to read.
