A beaver gnaws wood because it instinctively wants to build a dam or lodge. A scientist did an experiment with beavers: he placed a loudspeaker in one corner of their cage, then placed sticks and clay on the other side of the cage. He played sounds of trickling water through the speaker. Before long the beavers had surrounded it with a wall-like structure of sticks.
