On The River Of Life

When a babe I only needed
A cradle to float down the stream
At twenty a canoe
Was better suited to follow my dreams
At forty I needed full sails
To get ahead of others
At fifty I slowed down a bit
And gave my wife the rudder
At sixty these aching bones
Have slowed me to a totter
All I need now is a life jacket
To keep my head above the water
I've never let this river of life
Slow my future plans
But if I live to be eighty
I think I'll keep my feet on dry land.
