On celebrating the History of Women month 2019
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
It is March and as I welcome another cold but hopefully invigorating day
When the "political dynamics" for PM Justin Trudeau have changed
I must remember that women are what we are today because of men like him
And I must make mention of my mother's cousin aunt who remained a child widow
Until she died of natural causes and this strikes me as poignant for I smelt the scent of Ralph Lauren's Tender Romance
And thought that it is a beautiful perfume and alas! the lady did not discover the joys associated with it
But she went to school, learnt English and led the life of a women who partook of the joys of bookishness
And I am reminded of pioneers in feminist culture in India like reformers
Primary among them are Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Swami Dayanand Saraswathi
Who abolished child marriage, sati and female infanticide in Indian culture;
Coming back to Canada where women like Dr. Emily Stowe were themselves responsible for the suffrage movement
It has been feminist men like Justin Trudeau who have welcomed these women into their midst
And given them the power of the spoken word and executed act
And this brings me to both Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott and his trusted advisor, Gerald Butts
All of whom have resigned over the SNC-Lavelin prosecution scandal;
It was strangely worded without actual pointing of fingers, Ms. Philpott's resignation letter,
Particularly the reference to abandoning one's principles
And this brings me to the legal issues governing the case
For PM Justin Trudeau and the PMO have acted in an unscrupulous manner
Or so, we the public have been led to believe
And I say that although corruption is a crime in Canada
It is not considered one in Africa, leastways there is no reference to any legal clause on the internet
Although there is a paper from European Economics Letters by S. Asongu and O. Kodila-Tedika
Which states that corruption can be directly linked to organized crime
And Polity.org says that corruption is a pervasive problem in African countries;
And reverting to my essay on Linked In soon after Ms. Jody Wilson-Raybould's resignation,
I say that it is meritorious that Canadians have such high standards for their leaders
But SNC-Lavelin civi engineering construction company were acting on African soil
And corruption was the only way of getting the successful projects
That they undertook and completed under African law;
If PM Justin Trudeau and the PMO have pulled heavy muscle and stopped matters taking their course
It is not entirely wrong for different countries have different laws and legal issues
And we must bow down to these clauses
For it has been the focal point of Hollywood and fictional stories that what is black money is legal money in Swiss banks
But I do see that the Prime Minister of Canada owes his countrymen and countrywomen an apology
And a hug to his associates who left him in the lurch
But beyond that, his principles are that of a Canadian Prime Minister, getting the job done and striving for the best for the country.
