On Brexit and like pools of countries
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
Yesterday's copy of The Globe and Mail (March 16th,2019)had very informative articles on Brexit
By Henry Newman (a London journalist)and Adam Foulds (a British writer living in Toronto)
It is a question of whether Britain will actually leave the European Union
Three years after voting to do so
On a personal note, I observed that PM Theresa May looks worn out
By the entire debate in the British Parliament;
It is a case of ‘Doomed if you do and Damned if you do'
Leastways that is how it appears
The entire conundrum to the British
But they may choose to stay after all
Breaking it down to obvious facts
And that is revenue from imports and exports
For an economy which thrived under the EU, as I imagine,
Life is going to become hard in some ways
But they will be completely British;
I must explain that although Canadian, I was originally an Indian citizen
And it was an oft quoted statement that Britain thrived with the power of its colonies
But having a bit of a partiality to British literature and art,
I beg to differ because Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd deals with a sheep farmer
And some of Gainsborough's paintings deal with lush, rural farmland as do Turner's
And William H. Ainsworth's Windsor Castle: An Historical Romance has some pages devoted to hunting
And the conclusion I draw from all of this acquired bookish wisdom is that
Britain is a rich country with a lot of natural resources;
What other like instances come into play in the same breath as the EU
I think that the Soviet Bloc and the NATO countries had a similar agenda
Togetherness based on a certain principle of solidarity
But in both the cases, economy did not play a strong role
And perhaps, as with the NATO, which was an important organization until the Soviet Bloc existed
Under the looming threat of the Cold War
Has lesser authority in current times
And this is my own inference
And I could be wrong;
Google says: The European Union is a group of 28 countries
That operates as a cohesive economic and political block
And nineteen of the countries use the euro as their official currency
And I add:
And Britain might be jeopardising its economic growth and political freedom
By opting out of the EU
Or it may be doing the most patriotic of decisions and becoming completely British.
