With all the blue ethereal sky,
And spangled heav'ns, a shining frame,
Their great original proclaim:

In reason's ear they all rejoice And utter forth a glorious voice, For ever singing, as they shine, The hand that made us is Divine What a fantastic flight of imagery?
lovely poem. a pleasure to read. in the silence of night divine is heard.
A very beautiful poem of faith. I am surprised I have not seen this published often in anthologies. It's a smooth read, the language isn't offputtingly archaic, and those celestial images are truly magnificent and other worldly!
A superb song unfolding the sequence of nature's amazing manifestations and the great work entrusted to Sun as well as other starts in the constellation by it. Thanks for sharing it here.
Dear Ratnakar, Let us give credit where credit is due. Addison in his Ode expresses, and beautifully so, the awe, the power, the majesty of the Supreme Designer, the eternal God, as evidenced in nature. Why ignore the very Source of our being and credit nature as some blind force of itself, able to produce all that is beautiful and harmonious in the universe. Let us not overlook the fact that Addison was, in fact, praising God for His wonderful works.
Creator's power! Thanks for sharing this poem with us.
The creation of God surprises us through various moods and shades of nature around us: Th' unwearied Sun, from day to day, The work of an Almighty Hand. 'The Hand that made us is Divine.'
What though, in solemn silence, all Move round the dark terrestrial ball? What though nor real voice nor sound Amid their radiant orbs be found? In Reason's ear they all rejoice, And utter forth a glorious voice, For ever singing, as they shine, 'The Hand that made us is Divine Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
Heaven and the orbs a beautiful ode of upper nature with our existence and the Almighty as whole a praise in form ofhymn
Beautiful poetry but I do not believe the sun and moon proclaim their origins as Joseph Addison implies, we watch observe listen to nature, impose meaning due to our own cultural beliefs, true understanding seems to lurk between scientific advancements and moments of eureka.
This is one of the most beautiful poems that I have ever read. It tells of the universe and all of its wonderful attributes. Written with pure love and admiration for planet earth. Excellent.
I do not believe in god or anything of the sort, but that matters little here (to me) . This is a finely written piece of work, both clever and artistic.
Amen! Very delightful write dear Joseph Addison. I loved the way you have worshiped the LORD ALMIGHTY by giving thanks and recognising God as is! Stay blessed.
Great poem indeed; some of those lines one would read from top to bottom without feeling tired but instead yearn for more.
What I found intriguing is how the poet, Joseph Addison has dug out the second line ryhming perfectly in the meaning of the first line? But I believe master poets like Him are capable of picking a line out of wind, so to say.I found the poem very simple, yet very deep in meaning. Manohar Bhatia.
