Very nice translation Rajneesh Ji. This Walt Whitman poem resonates with all who love their country dearly and respect their fallen soldiers. A poem of intense patriotic emotions.

Walt Whitman wrote a fine, heartfelt tribute to Abraham Lincoln in this elegy. 'His lips are pale and still'. The awfulness of death.

I too like this poem about Abraham Lincoln's death very much. It is one of the best elegies of all. I love the ending, 'But I, with mournful tread/ Walk the deck my Captain lies, / Fallen cold and dead'.

A beautiful poem about a Captain of a ship who sacrifices his life to rescue the sailors. A gripping poem by Walt Whitman and equally awesome translation by Rajnish ji in Hindi. When my father was posted in Naval base, Cochin, I have heard such true stories of Captains who drown or die in the ship in order to save others. I remembered them when i read this poem.......10

Dear Geeta ji, I am really very sorry for not having replied to your comments earlier. I think it was due to some glitch that I could not get it (comment) in time. Thanks a lot for a lovely review of the poem and for your ideas about similar stories of valour and sacrifice of the captains of ships.

(2) The latest incident in recent history occurred when Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla, an officer of Indian Navy C/O INS Khukri, died when his ship was sunk during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. He ensured that the officers and sailors on the ship had left safely before he decided to go down with the ship to have a watery grave for himself.

(3) I was delighted to know that your beloved father also served Indian Navy. I too have a connection with Indian Navy when I visited Indian Navy's Eastern Naval HQ at Vishakhapatnam as their guest.
