Nothing Promised Poem by Bryan Sefton

Nothing Promised

We never tied ropes around each other
With fancy knots that said 'get out of that'
No locking of the door and hiding of the key
No lists of do's and dont's
Of where to go and what you're at
We never vowed not asked the other
To love honour or obey
Into infinity. For all eternity
Not even till our dying day
We never asked not expected it
That's not the way we wanted it
Not caged, nor shackled
Not displayed like some trophy
Or wrapped in black velvet
There was nothing in writing
No documents stating promises
No witnesses
No parchment saying that on this day
Nothing saying that she had to stay
So she didn't
