there is something inborn in us, i think, that is inspired by glimpsing distant mountains, that draws us to them. one of the things i most like about living here where i live is seeing the sandia mountains which rise to the east, marking that cardinal direction and especially beautiful at sunset as the red reflected sun and shadows cast give them their name, watermelon mountains. -glen

I can recall a few poems where mountains have been portrayed as saviours of a country's territory from enemies and invaders or depicted as the abode of various gods.
