Named Nastes*
after the forests on Mt Phthires,
where he lived,
the leader of the wild-speaking Carians
waged war wearing gold like a girl.

'He thinks it will save him, '
in his Greek, does Homer say.

Achilles of the swift feet killed him
in a river,
perhaps the full-of-blood Scamander.
The gold went godlike Achilles
swift-footed way.

* from the Greek for 'dense'

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Iliad 2.867+
Perhaps Achilles didn't need Agamemnon's gold.
There's a lot of dispossession of the dead-in-battle in The Iliad

Thank you for this piece of history. A lot has changed in the centuries though there is still greed.
