This poem was much admired by (the late) Spike Milligan, as it has been by me since I first heard it. My taste in poetry must be peculiar in some way, because so many lesser poems seem to accumulate unending accolade, while this wonderful work continues to languish in the shadows, unknown even by many long-time poetry-lovers, and mine is (at present) the solitary comment.
