My Red Beret Poem by Gayathri Seetharam

My Red Beret

My red beret
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
I crocheted a flower for my red beret
With yellow for golden sunshine
And red for a bright hue in life
And green for a greener pasture;

Each petal and the centre has a single crochet stitch
For myself grown from child to a middle aged woman
Who has preserved the bloom in her cheeks
And thank the Lord! The cheerful outlook on life;

This is followed by a double crochet stitch
For myself and my beloved husband
Who have been together many years
United by the bond of love and marriage;

To top it all, there is the triple crochet stitch
Which is symbolic of the third member of our family, our 21 year old son,
And together we make a loving family
And the apple of our eye is our wonderful child;

It is winter time in Toronto in Canada
And I think to myself that the beret will stand me in good stead
Protecting me from the chill of winter on a cold wintry day
And I say, Ke Sara Sara Sara, whatever will be, will be
When inside, I am worried as to whether I will make
My mark on life for otherwise,
I will be just a beautiful woman
In a red beret with a crocheted flower.
