This is the board,
This game we all play-
Fighting for the top spot in your heart
One minute climbing-
On top of the world,
The next, falling back
Down to Earth.
Everything depends on
The roll of the dice.
I was climbing to the top
Of the tallest building
When I found your note;
A crumpled letter full of snakes
Down which I must fall,
Back to the start,
At this rate I’ll never reach
The top spot in your heart.
I watch the words
Writhe their serpentine way
Across the page,
Weaving a web of deceit
Across my eyes.
I’m caught in your lies,
Tied around me like
an anchor,
Dragging me down.
Angels ascend to Heaven
Climbing ladders,
I slip down the scaly slide
Into the sea.
“Look…look…
Look” she said,
And pointed to the right.
I turned my head
And missed her
Fade away into the night.
