Musicale Poem by Mary Angela Douglas

Musicale

you with your peridot rings from the gumball machines
your oversugared lemonades
your desire to live out of the shade

all summer long
I dreamed you had come home
and were happy there

practicing your scales again
on a keyboard of sheer diamonds
so that the birds chirped

wildly as though you were april.
where have these sounds vanished
I ask no one else possible

that in the heart sparkle, endlessly recalled
as though you were braiding, still,
an indigo ribbon in and out of

the enchanted woods
