Motherhood defines me,
but often undermines me.
My fears for you are almost tangible.

Jeannette, I have always envied those who are fortunate enough to have a friend in a mother. The best of both worlds! You've done an excellent job in describing the complexities of being a good mother. Great poem! Love it!
Thanks for this encouraging feedback Richard it is much appreciated.
The balance between friend and Mother, I struggle daily to discover. i shall recover to continue with this special call of a mother. motherhood seen as a heaven' s call with all its responsibilities..... thank you very much. like it very much. tony
A mother can never be a friend As even friendship can be fake But on her you can always depend About this make no mistake......................... Defining mother and motherhood is such an impossible task. But its closest in definition to God who takes care of us....I invite you to my page too for your valuable comments
Misunderstandings can crop up in any relationship. Still the bond between a mother and child is a special kind.... it is a relationship where the cost is never counted.... but only the outcome or the reward! A beautiful write summing up the genuineness of a mother!
The little boy and the giving tree... Your poem is so upbeat Jeannette, so loving, full of hope and charity in the face of discovering boundaries between friend and parent... Isn't that the wish, desire, we all strive for in our relationships with our children? It certainly has been for me. And I don't know if it is simply fate, a message from God above, or sheer happenstance that brought me to your lovely poem this morning, but earlier this week it became necessary for me to evict my 24 year old daughter from my home... I can not even begin to describe what I am feeling - but I fear it is far from resembling the honest and beautiful aspirations that you shared here. Very good job poet...
Sometimes as a parent we have to make extremely difficult decisions John. As in all our relationships there are times when we need to be apart from each other. I truly hope that you and your daughter will overcome your difficulties and reconcile. Trust your inner guide, as we all must, in this our most challenging, yet vital role. May your relationship be the stronger for it.
John Richter's comments and Jeannette Heywood's reply thereto, both touched me. I liked both their words of wisdom.
Beautiful words expressed for every mother. Very much enjoyed. Thank you
