Monterey Poem by Richard D Remler

Monterey

.............

Tonight I watched the
Stars at play,

And they, in turn,
Watched me.

It is twilight
Over Monterey,

Beside a
Quiet sea.

Over the sand,
The rock,
And stone

Where breezes
Whisper
Through my night,

Over a
Shadowless
Unknown...

They tease the
Soft moonlight.

The waves
That never come to stay
Leavetheir gifts
Along the shore,

Driftwood from
Another time,
And seaweed from her bed.
Tiny shells
From ages past,
All it would ever answer for.

And those gently
Echoed blessings
Thoughtlessly
Left unsaid.

I breathe the air
And taste the salt
And feel the
Ocean's spray,

And I wonder
What the stars
Must think
When they gaze down
On me,

Alone,
Within my silence,
As the moments
Slip away.
Just another speck
Of sand
Gazing out upon
The sea.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
"Roll on, deep and dark blue ocean, roll.
Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain.
Man marks the earth with ruin, but his control
stops with the shore"
