Rating: 4.7

Memory is a cheating thing-
It only strives to please,
And over bitter clouds creates
A shimmer to deceive.

We do cheat life when suffering, by remembering the good things that have happened in our lives, helping us to deceive ourselves. Figurines of glass are broken or fractured when our memories start to fail. Really great poem, it says so much as it falls into our minds and memories. Thank you for sharing. RoseAnn

Your description is apt I wish you could have gone further into this subject that bewilders, bemuses, stifles and confuses us all.

I like this one Adeline. Most times I don't do requests for reads. I am not here for that. But you my dear are special.

As a poem, it is short, packed with thoughts and concentrated, with two definitions of memory: a cheating; n a kindly thing...this is a pleasurable indulgence in the willing self-deception...there are so many pains; n there are so many abstract sources of healing...i think, when we enter the memory world, it drops curtains on the present, though for a while...

A meaningful poem indeed...the title means to me as I visit an old peoples home 4 times a week and in the high care section all the aged have Alzheimers, memories of childhood they remember but don't know what they had for breakfast... a cheating thing...thanks for the read...regards

Adeline I love this poem! Not just the meaning behind it but the way it gently flows. When I got to the end I was disappointed that there wasn't more. I could have kept reading! So grateful for memory but also taken for granted. Sometimes I think we overburden it that, like a sponge, it becomes oversaturated then that's when it fails us.

Really enjoyed this. Well written. Too, I’ve always said: memory is soooooo convenient. It works just fine - when it wants to.

absolutely fantastic! This takes poetry to a point of practical importance! Gees, how many times, do I thank myself for not remembring the past and at the same time, how many times do i say to myself, 'darn it you forgot his name' lol. The symetry and balance is fantastic! 10/10 tfs

Memory should never be allowed in a court room.

I like your take on the intentions of Memory personified - is it telling white lies? Drawing a merciful veil over painful experiences in the past?
