Memory: God's Gift And Punishment Poem by Richmon Rey Jundis

Memory: God's Gift And Punishment

Rating: 5.0

Human, a being both blessed and cursed,
With power to recall, and power to forget,
Not like the animals, whose memory is fixed
They are free not to remember and just forget.

But what a burden memory can be,
To remember joys and loves that now are gone
Like a rainbow that was once above
But blown by the wind and storm of pain,
Like shining bubbles popped
By the scourging heat of the Sun,
Everything is gone.
Like the sweet memories that are heavy to recall
Because of the pain of past mistakes.

And yet, how cruel the mind that forgets,
The moments that shaped us, the people we loved,
Gone forever, as if they never were
The power to forget can be a blessing,
But if the memories of you
Are the ones that I must forget,
I will choose to be cursed by remembering,
Than to forget your sweet smiles,
Your bright face,
And the bitter-sweet memories of love
We had cherished form the past.
It is I who deserves to punished
For choosing the wrong
That erected a barrier between us:
I must be punished.

Again, an ancient soul of the past,
That resembles to my soul
Who loves the power of words and imageries
To invoke philosophical thoughts,
Whispered behind my ears, Friedrich Nietzsche,
Spoke to me of a world without God,
A world that has lost its guiding light,
Leaving us lost and adrift in the darkness.

The idea of God's death may fill us with dread,
For without him, what is the purpose of life?
We search for meaning in a world that seems empty,
And so, we are left with the curse of memory,
The weight of our past, and the uncertainty of our future,
Feeling lost and alone in a world without God.

Oh, how we long for the comfort of faith,
To believe in something greater than ourselves,
To know that we are not alone in this world.

But alas, the truth is
We have killed not God,
But the seed that God has planted in us,
The seed of Divine and rationality
That guided us towards the path towards light.
And we must now face the reality
Of this harsh world
Lived by Godless souls.
