Memorial Days Remembered Poem by Ernest Greiser

Memorial Days Remembered

MEMORIAL DAYS REMEMBERED

Memorial Day for Veterans is here again
Do you remember where it started and when?
Veterans Day will soon follow
We hope these days are not hollow
Is memorializing going away
Are they just another unknown holiday?
Do children really understand?
I fear for the youth of this land
Few remember the conflicts we were in
And the things we had to do in order to win
It seems most History is no longer taught in school
Although some cities have celebrations as a rule
But ask people what they are done for?
Most people say they are not quite sure
Now here is another scary thought
Is World Geography still taught?
Many people have no idea where other countries are
Only those few who have lost family and friends in lands so far
There are those of us old timers who can still remember days gone by
But Sad to say, when we go who will be left to remember us and cry?
