Maundy Thursday - Celebrate The Last Supper Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Maundy Thursday - Celebrate The Last Supper

Together they sat for one last time
as twelve apostles, as twelve friends of Jesus
and they shared the Last Supper;
Jesus broke the bread and gave it to his disciples
and told them to do this in his memory….
Christians call out to Jesus on this day
while recollecting this biblical story of yesteryears;
they recall the sufferings of Jesus and they pray
as they re-enact with passion the crucifixion
of Jesus though it occurred many centuries ago.

Condemned by kings and high priests who sent Him
to Mount Calvary to be nailed on the cross
and crowned with thorns amidst those thieves
yet He adhered to their punishment without any restraint;
but how could they do this to Jesus
who had no crime on his hands
yet they compelled Him to die on the cross
although He was so innocent and guiltless?

And as Jesus knew death was coming,
He fasted for forty days and prepared Himself
for His eternal journey to Heaven.
He called his friends and for one last time
together they sat and shared the Last Supper
where Jesus broke the bread and gave it
to his disciples and told them to do this in his memory.

Maundy Thursday is thus celebrated
as a day of reverence and sanctity
for Jesus showed us the way to love and share
to heal others and to speak the word of God;
he also taught us to live in humility and purity
and to be self-sacrificing and forgiving to others;
and, in joy or in despair, those who call out to Him,
Jesus is always with them.

Jesus is in your home, outside your window
even in your conscience and in your voice
when you call out to Him you will feel him
within you, around you
that you alone will be able to judge
and gauge His proximity to you;
Jesus the savior, Jesus the Redeemer,
let us celebrate the Last supper in His Memory forever.
