Matthew Chapter Twenty-Eight Poem by Day Williams

Matthew Chapter Twenty-Eight

Rating: 3.0

1 After the Sabbath, on the week's first day,
It dawned, and Mary Magdalene went with
The other Mary to the tomb.2 There was

A forceful earthquake, for an angel of
The Lord came down from heaven, went ahead
And rolled the stone aside and sat on it.

3 He looked like lightning, and his clothes were white
As snow.4 The guards were so afraid to see
Him that they shook, collapsing like dead men.

5 The angel told the women, "Don't be scared,
For I know that you're seeking Jesus, who
Was crucified.6 He is not here; he has

Risen, just as he said he would. Come in
And see the place where he was lying,7 then
Go quickly and inform his followers:

‘He's risen from the dead and he is going
Ahead of you to Galilee. You'll see
Him there.' Now I've told you my message, " 8 so

The women hurried from the tomb, their hearts
Afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell
His followers,9 then Jesus suddenly

Met them. "Good morning, " he remarked. They came
To him and clasped his feet and worshiped him,
10 Then Jesus said to them, "Don't be afraid.

Go tell my brothers they should leave at once
For Galilee; there they will see me." 11 While
The women went along their way, some guards

Went in the city and reported to
The chief priests everything that had occurred.
12 When the chief priests had held a meeting with

The elders and devised a plan, they gave
The soldiers a considerable amount
Of money,13 telling them, "You are to say,

‘His followers came after dark and stole
Him while we were asleep.' 14 If this report
Gets to the governor, we'll satisfy

Him and keep you from suffering for it."
15 The soldiers took the bribe and did as they
Were told. This story has been widely told

Among the Jews down to this very day,
16 Then the eleven followers went to
The Galilean mountain Jesus had

Instructed them to go to.17 When they saw
Him there, they worshiped him; but some had doubts;
18 Then Jesus came to them and said this: "All

Authority in heaven and on earth
Is granted me,19 so go and make disciples
Of all the nations, baptizing them in

The name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
And teaching them to follow all that I've
Commanded you, and surely I'm your friend

Always, even until the age's end."
