Mathematics Is Magical (Educational)

Rating: 5.0

The Greek philosopher Eratosthenes,
when mathematics was a novelty,
calculated the circumference of the Earth
in about 250 BC using geometry.

The height of a tree or a building
or a feature of earth's geography
can be determined by measuring at the
ground, and then using trigonometry.

When you want to know the current,
and you know the voltage and resistance,
If you solve a formula of Ohms law,
You will not need any assistance.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The Greek philosopher Eratosthenes of Cyrene
knew that on the summer solstice, June 21, when
the sun was at the zenith in the city of Syene,
Egypt (now Aswan) , that a vertical stick would cast
no shadow. At the same time, a vertical stick in
Alexandria,500 miles north, would cast a shadow
a little over 7 degrees north of the zenith.
He used geometry to calculate the circumference of
the Earth, but we can use a ratio (simple algebra) :
360/7.2 = X/500
X = 360/7.2*500
X = 25,000 miles.

Correct. Many scientific theories have been solved mathematically before they were discovered physically. Thanks for your comment.
