There seems to be a crisis of some kind in the background of the poem, but instead of reacting with anger and out of fear, the speaker reacts with confidence in love's triumph out of faith and hope. To be able to express such positive emotion when there must a strong temptation to accuse and lose hope shows a remarkable poise. I used to teach plays by Henrik Ibsen to high school students. I was fond of one his lesser known plays, THE LADY FROM THE SEA, which expresses exactly your sentiment in this poem. And the marriage triumphs at the end of the drama because husband and wife trusted each other's freedom.
