Lonely Leaf Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Lonely Leaf

Lonely leaf

They told me:
- "It will rain…"
-tonight, till tomorrow.

Saw breeze turning wind
-as it comes in movies.

With it ran lonely leaf
-half flight, half dancing.

Was brown, one-year dead
-yet, intact, undeterred;
-though tender has remained

Same homeless, in the sun
-uncovered, not for long
-when melted the snow…

Since grass, once again
-erected its blades
-against the invaders
-and leaf was one of them
-since could not integrate…

Poetic seemed the leaf
-dead running freely
-exposing immigrants,
-reflecting the bondage,
-like mirage in mirror…! ?

Watching the marathon
-felt seeing Kenyans;
-ageless and speechless
-killing road for bread,
-for school, far away…

In me though, lives dervish
-or Aref or Sufi; repeating:
- "Hoo" - "Ya Haqq. "
-To learned, life and death;
-look alike, are the same!
