Limerick: On The Floor

Rating: 4.9

With a chance to improve my old score
I indulged in the great game once more
but two draws and a loss
and those thoughts I can toss
for again I am back on my floor!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My friend and fellow poet Hank Beuning and I played in a chess tournament the other day. This tournament was rated by the United States Chess Federation. The USCF has a rating system. A player's rating goes up or down depending on whether he wins, draws, or loses, and on what his opponent's rating was. If you lose to a highly rated player your rating doesn't drop as much as if you lose to a lower rated player. Conversely, if you beat a player with a high rating, you gain more points than if you beat a player with a low rating.

In recent years (or have they always done it?)the USCF has established rating "floors". After you have played at a certain level consistently for some time, they will not let your rating drop below a certain point. Both Hank and I have a rating floor of 1600. No matter how many games we lose, our ratings will never drop below that number. To me, that doesn't make sense. I think they should let your rating drop if you lose, and not have arbitrary floors established, but that's the way it is.

My rating was as high as 1844 once. That was about 40 years ago. I think Hank's rating was about the same at one time.

Going in to this tournament, my rating was 1608 and Hank was on the floor at 1600. We played three rounds. Hank won one, lost one, and drew one, while I lost one and drew two. Hank's rating stayed the same while I dropped back to my floor of 1600!

Both Hank and I are in this picture, and I can identify at least four other players. This is not our most recent tournament, but one that was played a couple of years ago.

A limerick describing what actually happened is more credible than one penned out of reference. And there is a nice pun on floor, (something like handicap in golf?) . I liked reading it.

Thanks for the comment, Hank. The comment is worth more to me than the 10 rating, but thanks for both.
