Leap Out Of The Dark

LEAP OUT OF THE DARK

Life is a leap out of the dark and back,
observed John Updike. Though we can attack
the dark by shining light, we cannot halt
the darkness, the position that's default.

William Ray Price, Chief Justice of the Missouri Supreme Court, whom I quoted in "Overincarceration, " quoted John Updike's statement in his State of the Judiciary address on February 10,2010. In the address he also used the term "overincarceration" to criticize the way that courts imprison an excess number of people.
