This is a somber poem. It emphasizes the sorrow of life. Not this or that sorrow; it's not an inventory. It's rather a sorrow that is deeply embeded in the lives of us mortal creatures. I feel confident of this interpretation because the third stanza HOW INSIGIFICANT YET DEADLY TO BE A HUMAN BEING. This culd have been a depressing poem - could have been. Instead I would call its point of view tragic. It's not depressing because of the measured pace of the stanzas which convey dignity rather than panic. And there is no whining or petulence
