Landscape As A Hare Poem by Sheena Blackhall

Landscape As A Hare

What is the landscape of the hare?
Split-lipped, spring heeled child of the air
Peat and heather and grass and scree
Bounds like the soul of liberty

Borna leveret, curled in a form
Heartbeat pattering, fur-clad, warm
Shy and solitary, amber eyed
Wraith in the moonlight, see her glide

Then, when the corn is ripe to cut
Watch for the flash of the hare's short scut
Now she comes as the spirit of grain
Bounding out of the sun and rain

Ancient creature of lea and wood
Long before Abbot and Holy Rood
Long eared leapers, of buck and doe
Hares were here in the long ago
